Underwear From The 1970s To Today   no comments

Posted at 12:00 am in Underwear

The functionality of underwear grew during the 1970s and 80s to add a whole new aspect to it, which was fashion. Long gone was the simple purpose of having something to wear underneath your clothes. It became sexy and fashionable to care about what you wore underneath it all.

Sex appeal was the sole marketing campaign for underwear and also for swim garments, including bikinis, bathing suits, and swim trunks. Society became accustomed to seeing these images over and over again in popular culture. So much so that designs based on underwear eventually became part of normal wear, now worn over other clothes. Many pop stars of the 80s helped make this a full blown trend.

G-strings, originally worn mostly by strippers and various staff members of gentlemen’s clubs, became a staple in the 80s for swimwear in countries like Brazil. This trend would catch up with the rest of the world by the 1990s. And in current times, the g-string has transformed into underwear commonly known as the thong. Thong underwear is categorized, of course, by a design where a slip of fabric of varying widths is enclosed between the buttocks to hide the appearance of underwear lines. It has already become one of the most popular underwear styles worn by women. The male consumer is also warming up to the idea of adventurous undergarments, as thong wearing has been on the rise with them.

The use of sexual images to market underwear made by such designers as Calvin Klein became popular, showcasing scarcely dressed models that had a definite sex appeal to them. Mark Wahlberg broke free of his “Marky Mark” rapper persona in one of these advertising campaigns, which helped him become a marketable icon and famous actor. One of his first starring roles actually focused on his sexual image in the film “Boogie Nights.” From this launching pad, he’s gone on to star in many hit movies, and earn the respect of film buffs everywhere. In what other era would a mainstream film star be able to say that dropping his pants did wonders for his career?

According to market research firm Mintel, in January 2008, the men’s underwear market in the UK was valued at 674 million pounds or over 1.3 Billion US dollars. And sales of men’s underwear rose by twenty-four percent between 2000-2005. Women’s underwear stores such as Victoria’s Secret are also a huge industry, openly marketing the sex appeal of undergarments and swimwear. Victoria’s Secret’s commercial campaigns and catalogs are popular with more than just women, as many men also use them to purchase sexy garments for their partner.

WhatTypes of Lingerie Are Out There   no comments

When it comes to lingerie, there are many different types to choose from. From exotic lingerie, to sexy, sheer lingerie, garter belts, and more. The most classic lingerie style is by far the baby doll, which is usually a short gown with built in bra cups and a loose flowing skirt. These are typically made out of silk, nylon, and other sexy, sheer materials and are popular for all types of romantic occasions, from impromptu little trysts to wedding night fantasies.

Another classic lingerie item is the garter belt, which is designed to be worn around the waist and support sexy silk stockings or thigh highs. Garter belts have been worn by women for centuries, and todays garters are designed with comfort, and style in mind. Another lingerie classic, the teddy, has also been around for a long time, and is similar in appearance to a bodysuit or revealing one-piece bathing suit. They are very low cut and usually have a thong back.

If youre looking for a lingerie item that you can wear every day, even with jeans, a bustier is probably your best bet. Bustiers are sexy strapless bras that extend down to the waist and can be worn with or without panties. Bustiers are typically made out of silk or other shiny materials. Camisoles can also be worn as day wear, under a sweater or an open jacket, or on its own for a come-hither look, inside of the bedroom and out. For many women, this type of lingerie is their favorite, and most used.

For a more exotic lingerie look, thongs and g-string panties, that cover your front and leave your bottom exposed, are a racy alternative. Although there are many women who choose to wear thongs outside of the bedroom, thongs inside the bedroom are a much more effective way to set an exotic and romantic mood. Thongs may look uncomfortable, but they are actually much more comfortable than traditional underwear, which, lets face it, can be more than just a little restrictive and has a tendency to bunch and create unflattering bulges and lines as well.

Todays lingerie can be as daring or demure as you desire, from a romantic soft pastel babydoll to a dramatic leather lace up. Do your research and take the time to find the lingerie thats right for you, and you will be well on your way to a new look for the New Year.

The Legacy of Lingerie and Women   no comments

In the beginning, lingerie was designed to accent the breasts. Women in Crete wore corsets so extreme that they would literally thrust cleavage out as far as it could go. These garments were less about support, and more about the effect. In Rome, women wore bras made out of leather and loin cloths made out of either leather or wool.

In the Middle Ages, most women wore a close fitting, slip like garment called a shift, smock, or chemise, as well as petticoats and in particular, a petticoat known as the farthingale, which was stiffened with reed or willow rods so that the garment stood out from a womans body like a cone. The first corsets were worn underneath garments, and were designed to flatten the busts.

In the Industrial Age, inventions like the spinning jenny machines and the cotton gin made cotton fabrics more widely available, and people began to wear cotton underwear on a regular basis. The standard undergarment in this era was the union suit multi purpose long underwear. Women began wearing says in the 18th century, which wrapped around the torso behind and closed in the front, and these garments were stiffened and later evolved into a more restrictive, waist slimming corset.

A tiny waist was seen as the pinnacle of beauty, and as a result, corsets were lined with whalebone or steel which caused most women to be in constant pain, and even damaged some womens internal organs and bones. Breasts were thrust outward by corset designs, but were other wise not supported and allowed to hang loose. Most women also wore Crinoline petticoats, which were designed to keep skirts full and stiff.

The first underwear print ad in the United States was an advertisement for the Kenosha Klosed Krotch line, which emphasized durability and comfort. The first brassiere came two years later, as a result of the efforts of socialite Mary Phelps Jacob, who tied two handkerchiefs together to cover the whalebone of her corset, but the result was support for the cleavage, and a new project for Jacobs, who began making and distributing bras for her family and friends, receiving a patent for her design in 1914.

It has been said that the flapper era was truly the birth of modern lingerie, since decreasing hemlines necessitated a change in the look and feel of underwear and stockings. Since then, strapless bras, thongs, teddies, garters, and babydolls have become some of the most popular lingerie items on the market, and are designed for style, comfort, durability, and flexibility no whalebone or steel included.

How To Choose The Proper Bra For Your Daily Wear And More   no comments

Years ago all bras were very similar and the choices a woman had were quite limited. These days with the introduction of varied and diverse designs from companies like Victoria’s Secret women have a treasure chest of different styles and colors in their lingerie drawers. Now women no longer have to settle for just a basic white bra, they can have bras for work, for going out and in just about any imaginable color.

Spaghetti strap tops and dresses have inspired the creation of the razorback bras while the popular low cut cleavage showing designs have led to push up and padded style bras. All of these new designs have been brought forth by virtual battles between designers and innovations in fabrics which have allowed the bra to become very sophisticated. Every bra maker seems to be looking to create the next new design that no one has thought of before. The advances in technology in recent years are making all of these new designs possible.

The onslaught of high fashion lingerie designs has also brought about an explosion of specialty boutiques. In addition to much larger and specialized lingerie sections in large department stores there are many independent design firms that are filling needs that some of the larger companies don’t meet. These designers make bras that are very sexy and stylish for women of all shapes and sizes to help anyone look their best in their clothes. All women should bear in mind that there are five essential must have types of bras that will work for just about any situation.

The first type that a woman needs is the seamless T-shirt bra with very thin molded cups that gives great support and shape while not being revealing. This type of bra doesn’t have any designs or lace that would be visible through a thin top or sweater. Since the design is seamless it allows one to wear very thin T-shirts and tops while not having a bra that is visible to those who are looking at her. This type is a great bra for everyday wear.

Another needed style is the strapless design for use with strapless dresses, spaghetti strap tops and such. These new designs give great support and some even have removable straps. You want one that stays in place but doesn’t fit so tight that it leaves marks on one’s ribcage. The main thing that you want to have is security and there are many manufacturer’s that offer invisible elastic reinforcement that keeps the bra in place without being too tight.

The next type is the deep plunge version for wear with shirts and dresses with plunging necklines. Most of these are unpadded and also tend to use more untraditional fabrics for holding the cups together. This design helps keep the bra from being seen when wearing low cut tops and dresses.

Push up bras do just what the name implies to give a woman a little something extra, some women may not need that but many do. The great thing about these is they can be worn with just about any type of shirt or sweater and they are available in a variety of fabrics with and without lace.

The final must have style is the T-back bra which is needed for warm weather clothing. These go great with tank tops and sleeveless styles. This design keeps the straps hidden and you should go with the type with the front clasps for the best support.

Swimwear – What Is Hot At The Beach?   no comments

Summer is here once again and it is almost time to get out the bikini ready for those hot sizzling days at the beach. Or maybe not what is hot and what is not this year in swimwear fashion?

The good news is that this year the selection of swimwear is fairly comprehensive with quite a few styles all coming back into fashion at one time giving a wide choice. Continuing the trend of previous years, once again the bikinis appear to have gotten even smaller – if that is possible – we seem to be much more ready to accept well toned, well tanned bodies exposed on the beach. However, bikinis are taking a bit of a back seat at the moment with the one piece swimsuit coming back on the fashion scene with a certain amount of vigour and believe me there is a great demand.

Wearing a one piece swim suite this year will see you sporting this years up to date fashion in swimwear. Fashion is the strangest business ever, only a year ago the one piece swim suite would probably have been seen as being only for the older, and less body beautiful possibly even boring person. So, what is it that could have brought this particular fashion full circle? If you think logically fitness and health most likely have had a lot of influence. Getting fit is a massive craze and big business, swimming is an excellent way to achieve this and is often recommended by the medical profession. The most practical swimwear for this type of serious swimming is the all in one suit. Getting back to the beach, the most toned, perfect body can look even better in a one piece swimsuit, creating more mystery and interest by not having your body on full display! It does make sense if you think about it.

The other important factors you will have to think about is the colour, style and cut of your new swim suite is relatively unimportant. The colour is the single most important fashion consideration. Get it wrong, and you will regret your decision all summer. In my opinion bright is best, oranges, blues and greens always seem to work these days keep it simple and you are on to a winner. No matter what the current fashion or what you wear just remember summer days at the beach are all about having fun!
